Never Be Complacent About Your Computer Security

Have you heard the latest news? On February 2014, SFI also known as Strong Future International had been hacked and cyber crook made away with thousands of credit card information of its customers and affiliates. This incident provides yet another reminder that you must never be complacent about our computer security.

In the early days, such action were almost unheard off and they were more likely to be pranks or intimidation. However, today’s cyber crooks are doing it more for monetary gain or sabotage and it can even be deem as a terrorist act. Cyber security has become a topic that no organization or financial institution can afford to ignore. Even industries involved with Industrial Controls were not spared ( the Stuxnet incident ).

Majority of business transactions today are conducted online using computers as well as mobile devices. Because of such activities, the rise of internet crimes seems endless.  With the emergence of computer malware such as Viruses, Worms, Spyware/Adware, Trojans and many others we are constantly placing ourselves at risk by going online or surfing the web.

There are about 2.5 billions of PC in the world today, of which 70% of them surf the web. Statistically, there are almost 48% of them infected with Spyware or Adware. Do your math!

Here’s a graphic representation from HostGator Blog and article written by Sean Valant “A Day In The Life Of The Internet” show you why cyber crooks has a vested interest in stealing sensitive information.

How Many People Goes Online in 2010?

Today, most corporations and small business owners worldwide are utilizing software engineers or IT specialists to maintain appropriate internet security for their business. Some go to the extent of implementing Data Loss Prevention solution for their enterprises.

Spyware/Adware are growing day by day and most Internet security solution providers are reporting that they are encountering close to 100 thousands malware DAILY!  These software were installed on your computer without your knowledge or consent. Information about you or your computer can be seen or manipulated by others in an unwelcome manner.  Being difficult to remove on your own, it usually requires the installation of antivirus and anti-spyware software to erase these malware completely from your hard drive.

A lot of people think that their anti-virus software alone will protect them against spyware but this is not true if their antivirus program does not include internet security features at all.

Whether you’re a small business owner or even if you just use your computer on a regular basis, without some form of antivirus and anti-spyware protection installed on your computer is like “running around naked” on the web. You will be placing yourself at high risk to intrusion or theft by these cyber crooks.  Do you want to pay a large sum of money just to have viruses removed from your computer hard drive? Worse still, having your hard disk drive totally rendered useless by these malware?

What about FREE Antivirus or AntiSpyware software?

Always bear in mind that FREE Anti-Virus or FREE Anti-Spyware software is available to you so that you can evaluate the software prior to buying the proper one. However, many computer users took them at face value and use it as if it is the actual tool to protect their precious computer system or data.

And when they gets infected with all sorts of Worms, Trojans or Viruses, they swear that the Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware program that they were using is useless. Then, they hop on to the next available FREE program to try it out, hoping that they could find one that really protect their computer or data all the way.

This is ignorance beyond believed and also, Penny Wise Pound Foolish !

Also note that FREE Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware program has the following,

  • Lesser functionality (usually not with complete features!)
  • Relatively No Software Support!
  • Highly Likely Malware (if downloaded from Unknown Websites!)

Ask yourself this question,

“If those FREE software can do everything as claimed by their Security Providers then how did those companies make money smartly and survive throughout the years?”

Whatever you do, if you are online every day, you must never be complacent about your computer security. Invest in an actual working and functional program and you have peace of mind 95% of the time. It’s usually renewable annually for a cost of less than $40 today!

As for myself, I’m using Norman Control version of NSS Pro Version 10 for the protection of my computer system when I’m actively “running” around on the web!

We must realize that the subconscious mind is the law of action and always expresses what the conscious mind has impressed on it. What we regularly entertain in our mind creates a conception of self. What we conceive ourselves to be, we become. -- Grace Speare

  1. Computer security? The best thing to do is to switch from Windows to Linux. But I know not many people are ready to make the change. Thus, (Windows) laptops will keep getting infected in the future.

  2. It is really a smart idea to be aware of the security of all important files and keep your files safe from hackers. It is more important if you are travelling with important soft copies of documents. Thanks for all the tips. They were really helpful.
